SickKids Lottery - How Your Dollars Help

Annual grants made by SickKids Foundation to The Hospital for Sick Children are the largest investments in paediatric health care in Canada and the largest annual contributions to a hospital in this country.

SickKids Foundation made an investment of $64.4 million in children’s health care through granting and charitable activity.

How your dollars help

Over the past five years, SickKids Foundation has helped purchase clinical and research equipment from incubators to PET Machine for detecting cancer to rocking chairs, all thanks to the generous and constant support of our believers and donors alike. Here a just a few purchases made with funds:

  • Berlin Heart System
  • Anesthesia equipment and simulator
  • $900,000 towards a PET machine
  • Echocardiograms
  • Ophthalmology research equipment
  • Pain pumps for Haematology/oncology
  • Neurosurgery microsurgical instruments
  • Cardiac ECMO Perfusion
  • Over-bed warmers
  • Incubators
  • Endoscope for assessment
    of cleft patients
  • Parent sleep chair for use in an
    in-patient room with no parent bed
  • Optical forceps
  • Cardiac defibrillators
  • Rocking chair for the burns unit

Where the money went in 2008-2009
  • $34.6 million to the SickKids Research Institute
  • $8.6 million for capital equipment and projects at the hospital
  • $2.1 million to clinical and research equipment
  • $3.9 million to training and education for SickKids fellows, professorships, students, bursaries, conference attendance, lectureships, staff recognition, and awards
  • $1.9 million to Safe Kids Canada, the national injury prevention program for SickKids; About Kids Health, a family resource centre; and other health promotion initiatives
  • $434,351 to patient amenities in order to help SickKids patients and their families with expenses not covered by insurance, including parking, an overnight stay, or essential drugs
  • $1.6 million to special programs throughout the hospital including: art therapy, adolescent medicine, bereavement, sending patients to cardiac camp, the eating disorders program, the international patient program, the Reading Room, SCAN, seizure dog response program, Starlight Room, substance abuse, chaplaincy, and Beanstalk program
Net proceeds of the lottery are used to further the mission of the SickKids Foundation and help support The Hospital for Sick Children.
The Hospital for Sick Children, by the numbers
  • SickKids has more than 5,200 health-care staff and 630 physicians.
  • SickKids sees more than 300,000 patient visits a year.
  • About 13,000 children are admitted for a period of time or come for day surgery; 55,000 are seen in the Emergency Department, and almost 324,000 go to clinics, medical day care, or diagnostic visits.
  • More than 500 international patients from 48 different countries received treatment in 2008.
  • More than 11,000 cases come through the operating rooms each year at SickKids – that translates to more than 24,000 surgical hours.
